Mr. Dewell L. Lindsey

January 19, 1922 ~ May 27, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Prominent businessman and civic leader Dewell L. Lindsey, 95, of Cave Spring, died unexpectedly Saturday evening, May 27, 2017, in a Rome hospital following a sudden illness.

Mr. Lindsey was born in Cherokee County, Alabama, January 19, 1922, a son of the late J. D. Lindsey and the late Annie Ruth Chapman Lindsey. He was a graduate of Cedar Bluff High School, and was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U. S. Navy. For many years, Mr. Lindsey and his wife owned and operated the Cave Spring Hardware, He was also a partner in both the Cline and Lindsey Building Supply Company and the Cline and Lindsey Construction Company. Mr. Lindsey was one of the founders of the Bank of Cave Spring, later to become the United Community Bank, and served as Chairman of the Board for 32 years until his retirement in 1998. A member of and former Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring, Mr. Lindsey was also a former member and past president of the Cave Spring Ruritan Club.

Mr. Lindsey was married to the former Martha K. Perry on January 25, 1952, and was preceded in death by her on June 16, 2003. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Lindsey was also preceded in death by a son, John D. Lindsey in 1997, and by two brothers, Wayne Lindsey and Shelton Lindsey.

Mr. Lindsey is survived by one son, Tom Lindsey and by his step daughter, Mrs. Victoria Stanz Abernathy and her husband Billy Wayne, all of Cave Spring; and by his grand-children, Ann (Don) Hensley, Charles (Candice) Howard, Perry (Josh) Marshall, Knox (Steevie) Lindsey, and Jessie Lindsey. Six great-grandchildren Alex Howard, Andrew Hensley, Abby Howard, Kendall Howard, Maverick Marshall, and Ashlynn Lindsey; two brothers, Earl Gene Lindsey of Central, S.C., and Gerald Lindsey of Rome; one sister, Mrs. Reba Mason of Centre, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Lindsey were held Tuesday evening, May 30, 2017, at 6:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring with Rev. Chris Johnson officiating. An honorary escort included Horace Cline, Gayle Godfrey, John and Shelia Shaw, Phyllis Hill, Brenda Twilly, Patricia Hestly, Robin Clements and Betty Jean Garner. Private interment services were held in the family lot of the Cave Spring Cemetery.

The family received friends at the church Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 P.M. until the funeral hour. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring, P. O. Box 327, Cave Spring, Ga. 30124.
