Captain Larry E. Bray, USN (retired)

Captain Larry E. Bray, USN (retired), 83, of Rome, and formerly of Cave Spring, died Wednesday, December 27, 2017 in a Rome hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Bray was born in Chamblee, Georgia July 30, 1934, son of the late Everett W. Bray and the late Hazel Harrison Bray. He was raised in Chamblee, graduated from the DeKalb County Schools, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia State University. Mr. Bray joined the Navy where he did Aviation Flight Training at Pensacola, FL. and Kingston, TX., becoming a Navy fighter pilot. He served his country for 33 years, during the Korean Conflict and later in Reserve Duty at NAS Atlanta, retiring with the rank of Captain. Mr. Bray was a member of the American Legion McClain & Sealock Post 136 in Lindale and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring.

Besides his parents, Mr. Bray was preceded in death by a son, Ty Harrison Bray, August 2, 2002.

Mr. Bray is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Jean Futral, to whom he was married November 14, 1970; and by his children, Joan (Grover) Holmes, Robin Bray McFalls, Melissa (Richard) Gould, Tim Forbes, Larry Bray, Jr., Tommie (Paul) Mack, and Robert (Norma) Bray. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services for Mr. Bray were held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel with Dr. John Page officiating. A detail from the U. S. Navy provided military honors.

The family received friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
