Mr. Elwood Donald (Don) Smith, age 80, of Cave Spring, died Sunday morning, April 17, 2016 in a Rome hospital following a sudden attack suffered earlier at his residence. Mr. Smith was born in Jackson, Georgia, January 26, 1936, a son of the late Sam Smith and the late Lucille James Smith. Mr. Smith was a graduate of the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring where he participated in football and track. Mr. Smith made his home in Jackson for a number of years with Mr. and Mrs. Doc McMichael, who helped look after him. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service in Macon. Survivors include his wife, the former Suzanne Caple, to whom he was married January 27, 2006; by his children, Mrs. Ginger (Brian) Popham, Mrs. Candice (Randy) Pledger, Ms. Debbie Smith, and Ms. Shelia Smith; and by his grandchildren Emily Michelle Popham and Jerrold Wyatt Pledger and 14 other grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Jean Smith Fountain of Greenville, Georgia, four nephews and a niece also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held Thursday afternoon, April 21, 2016, at the Cave Spring United Methodist Church at 3:00 P.M. with Dr. John Page officiating. Interment followed in the family lot of the Cave Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers included Randy Pledger, Brian Popham, Wyatt Pledger, Daniel Houston, Sonny Holman, and Eric Whitworth. Mr. Jim Whitworth and Mr. Brook Blankenship served as an honorary escort.  The family received friends at the Cave Spring United Methodist Church before the service on Thursday from 1:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.
