Mr. John William Shaw, 85, of Cedartown, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, July 22, 2023 at his residence.
Mr. Shaw was born in Rocky Hollow, Alabama on October 4, 1937, the son of the late William Herman Shaw and the late Mildred Elizabeth Angel Shaw.
Mr. Shaw attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Chi-Phi Fraternity. He became associated with the Borden Milk and Ice Cream Company and worked in Savannah and later Fayetteville, N.C. Mr. Shaw and his wife moved back to Rome and they owned and operated the Shorter Avenue Dairy Queen for almost 30 years. Mr. Shaw owned and operated John Shaw’s Chicken Ranch for 21 years on the Polk County line. He was a member of the Georgia Cattleman’s Association and the Cave Spring Liars’ Table.
Many remember Mr. Shaw as a first employer or his association with high school rodeo which he supported and encouraged many to participate in, as well as the wagon trains that he enjoyed.
Besides his parents, Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Shaw Watkins on June 14, 2019; by a grandson, William Lyle Shaw December 14, 1994; and by two sisters, Mrs. Betty Ann Swafford and Mrs. Elizabeth Storey.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, the former Sheila Powers, to whom he was married December 30, 1961; and by two sons, Greg (Paige) Shaw of Gore, and Jerry (Dawn) Shaw of Cedartown. Three grandchildren, Mrs. Corie Elizabeth Watkins Dempsey and her husband Jimmy, Walter Loyd Watkins and his wife Jenny and Lacey Shaw Roberson and her husband Kyle and two great-grandchildren, John Allen Dempsey and Charlotte Belle Dempsey also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Shaw will be held Tuesday afternoon, July 25, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel with Rev. Dale Byars officiating and Mr. Robbie Hodges giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Rehoboth Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Kyle Roberson, Walt Watkins, Jimmy Dempsey, Ben McCain, Jonathan Orebaugh, Terry Shelton, Matt Moore and Patrick Scoggins.
Mr. Shaw’s family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from noon until the service hour.
