Mrs. Carol Whorton Obituary

Mrs. Carol Whorton, 89, of Cave Spring, died Tuesday afternoon in a Rome hospital following a brief illness. ]

The former Gwendolyn Carol Mathis, Mrs. Whorton was born in Chattanooga, August 21, 1932, a daughter of the late Otto Edward Mathis and the late Margarite Burkhart Mathis and was a graduate of the Chattanooga High School. Mrs. Whorton was married to Paul W. Whorton on March 12, 1954, and was preceded in death by him June 27, 2012. She was associated with the Cave Spring Vocational Rehab Center for the Deaf for a number of years.

A member of the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring, Mrs. Whorton was also a member of the Happy Hearts Group at the church and enjoyed square dancing with Paul, made beautiful quilts and loved family history and genealogy.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gaines Edward Mathis and Julian Lamar Mathis.

Survivors include her son, Timothy Paul Whorton (Lisa) of Canton; and two daughters, Mrs. Gweneth E. Whorton Lewis of Rome and Mrs. Terry Lynn Whorton Lee (Alan) of Woodstock. Six grandchildren, Dustin Brantley Lewis, Matthew Arron Lewis, Andrew Marcus Whorton, Timothy Blake Whorton, Arianne Hope Lee and Peyton Tray Lee; four great-grandchildren, Davis Benton Lewis, Alan Joseph Swaney, Jace Andrew Whorton, and Madison Mae Whorton, and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Mathis Salas also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Whorton were held Friday, June 17, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Cave Spring with Rev. Jarrod Kinsey officiating. Interment followed in the Rehoboth Community Cemetery. Pallbearers included Rip Montgomery and her grandsons, Dusty Lewis, Matt Lewis, Drew Whorton, Blake Whorton, and Peyton Lee.

The family received friends at the church Friday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until the service hour.
