Mrs. Peggy Scalf Obituary

Mrs. Peggy Ann Scalf, 84, of Lawrenceville, formerly of Cave Spring, died Thursday afternoon, February 27, 2020 in a Lawrenceville care facility following an extended illness .

The former Peggy Ann Crouch, Mrs. Scalf was born in Monticello, Kentucky March 26, 1935, a daughter of the late Jim Ed Crouch and the late Ada Woodrow Spradlin Crouch. A graduate of Warfield High School in Lovely, Kentucky, Mrs. Scalf was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She was married to Frank Scalf August 29, 1953, at the courthouse in Paintsville, Kentucky. They made their home in Columbus, Ohio for a number of years. They then moved to Gadsden, Alabama, and then they moved to Cave Spring in 1987, where Mr. Scalf served as Mayor from 1999 until 2003. Mr. Scalf died March17, 2008.

Mrs. Scalf enjoyed being a wife and mother, and was always ready to feed a crowd and liked having company. Her entire life was spent caring for others. She loved crafts, sewing, picking up pecans, making buckeye candies, painting and cooking; all activities she did for those she loved. To quote Mrs. Scalf, “I have sure enjoyed our five kids and our families. There was never a dull moment around Frank. He could always tell a tale about growing up.” She and Frank complimented each other, he being bolder and outspoken with a big sense of humor, and she being quieter and more sensitive. She once said “alone we were not much, but together, we were something.” Peggy Ann Scalf, a truly wonderful mother, was indeed something. She will be missed by her family.

Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Scalf was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Duncan Crouch and Henry Bruce Crouch; and by a sister Mrs. Nancy Sue Crouch Webb.

Mrs. Scalf is survived by five children, Mrs. Ada Owen (Jimmy) of Auburn, AL., Mrs. Wanda Price (Eddie) of Lilburn, GA., Mrs. Dorothy Dixon of Alexander City, AL., Mrs. Donna Barrett (Walter) of Cleveland, GA., and Michael Frank Scalf of Tupelo, MS.; by nine grandchildren, Dana Gibson (Nathaniel), Cory Collier (Alexis), Dylan Scalf, Hannah Morris (Clay), Roxanne Kelly (Kolton), Nick Scalf, Chloe Barrett, David Price and Jasper Price; and by five great-granchildren, Mary Ashton Gibson, Logan Scalf, Hagan Collier, Ben Gibson, and Owen Morris. Three brothers, Joe Crouch, John Crouch, and Max Crouch; one sister Mrs. Grace Shearer Rodgers and a number of other family and friends also survive.

The family received friends Sunday afternoon, March 1, 2020 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel.

Funeral services for the family were held later at the graveside of the Round Hill Cemetery with Elder Timothy Dunn officiating.
